Greetings!

I’d like to welcome our new evening students to Northwest Academy! I’ve included some key aspects to establishing a solid foundation for learning, how to utilize the school to your advantage, and what to expect from your first term.

First Day of School

By Alexa Severtsen

The first day of school is both exciting and overwhelming… being in a new place, meeting new classmates, buying school supplies, ordering text books & anticipating the many tests that lie ahead. To lay the foundation for success at Northwest Academy, our teachers and support staff make exceptional efforts to help students navigate through the material of anatomy, physiology, kinesiology and massage technique.

In the first term, Northwest Academy tackles the subject matter head on, creating opportunities for students to meet with teachers outside of class and receive private tutoring. Many of our students haven’t been in school for years and aren’t accustomed to the rigorous schedule. Tutors are available to both identify learning styles and develop a personalized study program for each student. Properly managing study time is crucial in getting the most out of our program. Ideally, good study habits will increase comprehension and understanding, improve grades and ultimately prepare students to pass the national massage exams, which is required to be licensed in Washington State. Northwest Academy currently has a 100% pass rate on the national massage exams!

Another great benefit of our school is the after hours practice policy. Although our instructors allow ample time to learn new techniques, we encourage students to practice their massage skills outside of class. Many students exchange massages with classmates, recent grads, or staff, reviewing technique and proper body mechanics. This arrangement not only provides instant one-on-one feedback, but also allows integration of all the subjects. For instance physically palpating attachment sites of muscles better solidifies body knowledge compared to reading it from a textbook. Many students find practicing to be unsurpassed, improving their skills in injury assessment, massage technique, and treatment plans.

If you’re looking at becoming student, keep in mind the additional hours needed to be successful. In addition to text books, practice makes perfect, so don’t hesitate to ask people for help, which I’m sure your family and friends are more than willing to volunteer for.
